Mountain, Moon, Planet

31 Jan

As we were heading home from our regular Tuesday night quiz I caught a glimpse of the sky doing something interesting.  Unfortunately the photo isn’t amazing, there was a bit too much street light interference but any shot is better than no shot.©2017 Cathy Craig

When I turned around there was a view of the Casino that I had not seen before.  This angle might need some further exploration with my other camera.

Aurora Australis

8 Oct

Doing the happy dance.  We headed out for a better vantage point to try to take a photo of The Southern Lights.  A quick trip to Park Beach, Dodges Ferry and my first attempt at capturing the lights.  I remember as a kid sitting in the back yard and watching the colours bounce all around the sky.  Tonights show was much more subtle and more like a laser light pointing into the sky at times.  Suffice to say I’m a bit happy with what I caught.  Thanks to #Bom_Tas for the Aurora alert notice.

Star Trails

7 Oct

I’ve wanted to try my hand at capturing star trails for a while now.  The timing has just never been right.  Tonight we got a message from a friend saying the Southern Lights were shining.  Being quicker to the tripod I got first dibs and this is one of the images I captured.

Olympus Workshop

21 May

Tonight HWS and I had the opportunity to participate in a workshop with two Olympus camera experts.  The topic was night photography.  Wow, did we have a great time.  We all learned about some of the settings available on our cameras to help with low light, long exposures and just plain old fun shots.

The location was Salamanca and surrounds.  Can you guess what the following photo is and where we were?

Here is another shot taken in St David’s Park.  This was so much fun and something I’m looking forward to trying again.  Amazing what can be done with a few kitchen items and a cigarette lighter 🙂

City at Night

17 Feb

Tonight I had the chance to photograph a couple of well known local icons.  The first is Wrest Point Casino, Australia’s first legal Casino.

The second is the fountain in Franklin Square, fondly known locally as Franko.  It was a photo opportunity to grab while it’s there as the fountain does not always operate at night.  I was inspired recently by another local photographer who takes magical photos Wilkography.

As I didn’t have a tripod with me I had to improvise by placing my camera on the back of the seats and on the ledge of the water bubbler.  They may not be the perfect exposure or composition but I did manage to get the blurry water effect that I was after by experimenting with 5 – 15 second exposures.

The camera on fully auto grabbed a pretty decent shot for a point and shoot effort too.

We then had some fun with our phone flash lights.

Suffice to say, watch out Franko, we will be back.

Flight Path

12 Feb

This shot was taken about 30 mins after sunset and as I went out I noticed a plane coming in ready to land, as it popped in and out of the cloud I managed to get this shot.OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Luncheon with new friend

10 Feb

Today I met face to face with a new internet friend.  We both laughed and talked a lot.  We also both remembered the first time we met face to face with someone from the internet – Oh no, what if they are an axe murderer?  Suffice to say neither of us are axe murderers, but we did manage to polish off a long lunch, and maybe I forgot to take a photo before digging in to dessert 😉

Tonight I had another play with night shots or late sunset photos.  I’m thinking I might be getting the hang of it.  I downloaded a trial copy of lightroom today, but that is a whole new world of skills I need to learn.  So for now, I’m sticking with simple crops as my only edit.
